Bear Valley Rescue
Bear Valley Rescue: A Champion for Equine Welfare Since 2004
Established in 2004 and registered as a federal charity in January 2005 and as a provincial society in Alberta in 2008, Bear Valley Rescue has dedicated itself to the welfare of horses. The organization’s journey began with an eye-opening encounter with the plight of horses at PMU (Pregnant Mare Urine) farms, which were prevalent for hormone replacement therapy production. Disturbed by the conditions and fate of the horses, particularly the foals considered as by-products, Bear Valley Rescue started its mission to provide a sanctuary for these animals.
Over the years, Bear Valley Rescue has expanded its efforts to rescue not only horses but also other farm animals such as rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats, llamas, and cows, currently caring for about 150 animals. The rescue operates on a 40-acre facility in west-central Alberta, where it has also fostered a close-knit community with supportive neighbors contributing resources like pasture land.
Bear Valley Rescue has been instrumental in rehoming numerous horses, transforming their fate from potential slaughter to finding loving homes. The rescue’s commitment to animal welfare was recognized in September 2015 when it became the first equine sanctuary in Canada verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), a testament to its adherence to rigorous animal care standards.
